When your spouse needs assisted living or memory care but you don’t

If you have found that your spouse needs more assistance with the activities of daily living that you can provide, you are probably considering an assisted living or memory care community.

The good news is that even if you are still totally independent, you and your spouse can live successfully together in an assisted living community. Care associates will provide assistance and support for your spouse as needed, and you can continue to live your life as you have been. Meals are provided, but if you prefer to continue cooking, many communities offer apartments with kitchens.

If your spouse needs memory care but you’re not ready to be totally separated, you will want to choose a community that also has independent or assisted living apartments on the same campus. You will probably not be able to reside within memory care with your spouse, but living in an apartment nearby enables you to spend time with them every day and receive the respite you need from constant caregiving.
