The difference between senior living and senior housing

People, especially the media, tend to use the terms "senior housing" and "senior living" interchangeably. But they are not the same thing. (Admittedly, we may be slightly biased because of our name.) But, objectively speaking, this is the difference in the definitions of the two terms:

Senior housing is where you live.

Senior living is how you live.

Senior housing refers to the location, the physical structure in which you are living. Usually, we think of these as facilities, buildings in which people of like age and health are housed. Within the senior living industry, the term "facility" is now a dirty word, the word "community" being preferred.

Senior living, on the other hand, refers to lifestyle. You may be living in a community of some kind, or you may be aging-in-place at home or in a family member's home. No matter where you are, senior living is about so much more than housing.

That's why SeniorLiving.com is so much more than just a housing directory. Of course it';s important where you live. And in our nationwide directory you are very likely to find housing in the right location and at the right price. But it's just as important how you live. That's why we give you information on how to stay healthy, how to age-in-place successfully, and even how to manage your money and plan for your retirement.
